Practical Networking Tips for Nurses
Whether you're just starting your nursing journey or you're a seasoned RN exploring new horizons, one thing is true across the board—networking matters. As nurses, we often focus on patient care, charting, and clinical skills. But one of the most underrated tools in building a fulfilling, dynamic career is connection.
At The Nomadic Nurse Podcast, we believe in creating community, sharing knowledge, and empowering nurses to grow—both professionally and spiritually. So today, we're diving into some practical, no-fluff networking tips that you can start using right now.
Why Should Nurses Choose to Network?
You might be thinking, “I’m already busy enough—why should I focus on networking?” Here’s the truth: networking opens doors that skill alone cannot.
Here are a few key reasons to network as a nurse:
🩺 Career Advancement – Whether you're looking to move into leadership, specialize in a new field, or explore travel nursing, the right connection can fast-track your journey.
🌍 Opportunities Beyond the Bedside – From starting a business, writing a book, launching a podcast, or working in policy and education—networking connects you to others who are doing the same.
💡 Knowledge & Mentorship – It’s not just about who you know—it’s what you learn. Conversations with experienced nurses, mentors, or innovators can spark ideas and personal growth.
🙏🏽 Spiritual & Emotional Support – Nursing is hard. Building a supportive community of like-minded nurses—especially those who share your faith—can help you stay grounded, encouraged, and inspired.
Nomadic Truth: Networking is not about being popular—it’s about being positioned.
1. Start With Your Current Circle
You don’t have to attend a big conference to start networking. Your colleagues, nurse educators, and even your favorite travel nurse recruiter can open doors. Be intentional—ask questions, share your goals, and let people know what you're passionate about (whether it's ICU, public health, entrepreneurship, or global missions).
Nomadic Tip: Don’t underestimate casual conversations in the breakroom. Some of the best opportunities start with “Hey, I’ve been thinking about…”
2. Use Social Media Strategically
Instagram, LinkedIn, and even TikTok can be powerful tools for nurses. Follow pages, connect with other travel nurses, engage in the comments, and DM people you admire. Show up authentically and add value—share your story, post educational content, or even start your own page.
Nomadic Tip: Hashtags like #TravelNurse, #NurseLife, and #FaithFilledNurse can help you connect with like-minded people in the space.
3. Attend ANY Events & Conferences
Whether it’s a national nursing conference or a local continuing education workshop, events are rich with connection opportunities. Bring your business cards or just be ready with a confident introduction. And don’t just attend—engage. Ask questions, share insights, and follow up afterward. Consider different types of conferences and events that’s outside of the nursing profession such as business-oriented conferences, local community events, any public speaking events with inspiring keynote speakers, etc. Go on social media and eventbrite, and take a look at various of events that spark interest. In 2018, I started networking by attending a women’s conference with movers and shakers of my local community as keynote speakers and hosts. It was that event that changed the entire game for me! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself in rooms that you would never imagine. You would be surprised at the connections you would make that can be the spark for a new idea.
Nomadic Tip: If you're shy, go with a friend or set a goal to meet at least 3 new people, and exchange social media.
4. Get Involved With Professional Organizations
Associations like the ANA (American Nurses Association), Black Nurses Rock, or Christian Nurses Fellowship offer mentorship programs, virtual meetups, and leadership development opportunities. Joining a community can lead to job leads, speaking opportunities, and lifelong friendships. Here are some examples of Canadian organizations (again, don’t hesitate to expand beyond the nursing organization!):
CNA (Canadian Nurses Association)
Canada’s national professional voice for nurses. They offer webinars, certification, advocacy, and leadership opportunities.

Nomadic Tip: Many organizations have student or early-career discounts—don’t let budget hold you back.
5. Give Before You Ask
Networking is not about asking for a job—it's about building relationships. Be the nurse who uplifts others. Share job postings, recommend a great preceptor, or simply check in on a fellow nurse going through burnout. When you give, you naturally attract the right connections.
Nomadic Tip: Consider mentoring a younger nurse or creating a small accountability group. You never know who’s watching your journey.
Final Thoughts
As a nomadic nurse, your path might look different than others—but that’s a good thing. Lean into your uniqueness, build relationships with intention, and stay open to divine connections. Networking isn’t just about career moves—it’s about building a tribe that moves with you, supports your purpose, and helps you walk boldly in faith and calling.
